What follows is a speech written by my sisters addressed to my grandmother.

Dear Grandma,
We’re here today on your birthday in your favorite church, gathered through the profound pain of your absence, to celebrate your life as a woman, wife, mother, and grandma.
Seen as there are no words to describe the sudden void you have left in all of us, we will use our own to express how much you’ve impacted our lives.
You have always been unique and you never walked by unobserved, with your unmistakable style, enriched by impeccable makeup, colored bracelets and your golden locks, promulgating an aura of eternal youth. As you always said, it’s important to forever remain childlike inside, as you always were. This is why today we’re wearing the colors you loved so much: Watching us from up there, you never would’ve wanted us to wear black.
Thank you for all the summers spent in Sabaudia, a place found in all our hearts, where you and Grandpa raised us, between cutlets, sunsets, American flea markets, magic tricks, baths in tiny inflatable swimming pools, and so much love. You and him have always been firm bastions throughout all the chaos of our lives, from Rome all the way to Dubai, and for this we will carry you with us forever, as an indelible part of who we are.
You always said how you couldn’t wait to see Grandpa again, the love of your life. For as much as it is impossible to imagine life without you, we can now think of you both as happy, one in the arms of the other. And we cannot express anything but gratitude for the time we have spent together.

Cara Nonna,
Oggi siamo qui nel giorno del tuo compleanno nella tua chiesa preferita. Riuniti nel profondo dolore della tua assenza, per commemorarti come donna, moglie, madre, nonna.
Visto che non ci sono parole per descrivere il vuoto improvviso che hai lasciato in tutti noi, useremo le nostre per esprimere quanto colmavi le nostre vite.
Sei sempre stata unica e non passavi mai inosservata, con il tuo stile inconfondibile, arricchito da trucco sempre impeccabile, braccialetti colorati, e le tue mèche bionde, trasmettendo un’aria di eterna giovinezza. D’altronde, come dicevi sempre, è importante restare bambini dentro, e tu lo sei sempre stata. È proprio per questo che oggi portiamo i colori che tanto amavi: Guardandoci da lassù non ci avresti mai voluti vestiti di nero.
Grazie di tutte le estati trascorse a Sabaudia, il posto del nostro cuore, dove tu e Nonno ci avete cresciute, tra cotolette, tramonti, mercatini americani, i vostri trucchi di magie, bagnetti in piscine gonfiabili, e tanto tanto amore. Siete sempre stati un punto fermo nel caos delle nostre vite, da Roma fino a Dubai, e per questo vi porteremo sempre con noi, come parte indelebile di chi siamo.
Dicevi sempre che non vedevi l’ora di riabbracciare Nonno, l’amore della tua vita. Per quanto sia impossibile pensare a una vita senza di te, ora vi immaginiamo felici, uno tra le braccia dell’altra. E non possiamo che essere grati del tempo che abbiamo potuto trascorrere insieme.
